I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. CHICAGO – Derek Holland’s virtual debut with the virtual Pirates wasn’t very good. The veteran left-hander was tagged for five runs in two-plus innings as the Chicago Cubs used two home runs and five RBIs from Kyle Schwarber to notch an 8-3 victory Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. The Virtual Buccos have their first losing streak of the season, dropping the first two games of the three-game series to fall to 2-3. Added to the 40-man roster before the game, Holland allowed just two hits. However, he was hurt by three walks and two home runs. Schwarber hit a grand slam with none out in the first inning to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead

CHICAGO -- The Virtual Pirates played for six hours, 51 minutes on a chilly Monday afternoon at Virtual Wrigley Field but came up short in the end. David Bote’s RBI single with one out in the 19th inning off Edgar Santana lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 7-6 victory over the Pirates. Bote’s solo home run with two outs in the 17th inning had kept the Cubs’ hopes alive. The loss dropped the Virtual Buccos to 2-2. Anthony Rizzo led off with the winning rally with a single and Kris Bryant drew a one-out walk. Bote then grounded his game-winning hit into center field and Rizzo beat Guillero Heredia’s throw home. It was a rough day for Heredia as he also

I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Virtual Pirates entered the season with high hopes that rookie right-hander Mitch Keller would show substantial improvement over his disappointing major league debut in 2019. He certainly did in his first start of 2020, pitching three-hit ball over six innings as the Pirates routed the Tampa Bay Rays 11-0 on Sunday afternoon at Virtual Tropicana Field. Keller struck out eight and walked five in a 104-pitch outing. Kyle Crick, Richard Rodriguez and Edgar Santana completed the five-hit shutout as the Pirates took two of three in the season-opening series. Josh Bell hit a two-run home run off Brendan McKay in the top of the

I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Austin Meadows is haunting the Virtual Pirates. Meadows hit a pair of home runs to pace the Tampa Bay Rays to a 7-4 victory over the Pirates on Saturday afternoon at Tropicana Field. He also doubled while going 3 for 4 with four RBIs against his old team. Meadows has homered three times off the Pirates in the first two games of the season and driving in five of the Rays’ eight runs. Joe Musgrove (0-1) had a rough season debut as the Pirates dropped to 1-1. The big right-hander was tagged for five runs and seven hits in three-plus innings while striking out four and walking one. Meadows’ first home run was a solo shot with tw

Archer, Bell lead Virtual Pirates to opening day win

I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. --- Maybe it was pitching at Virtual Tropicana Field that caused Chris Archer to turn back the clock on opening day. Archer pitched 7 1/3 strong innings in his first game against his old team and Josh Bell belted a three-run home run off former teammate Tyler Glasgow as the Virtual Pirates beat the Virtual Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Thursday. After struggling with the Pirates since being acquired from the Rays in a trade for Glasnow and Austin Meadows on July 31, 2018, Archer looked like the pitcher who was selected to two All-Star Games while playing for Tampa Bay. Archer allowed one run and five hits while striking out seven an

I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. Since virtual opening day is only a day away, it’s season preview time for the 2020 Virtual Pirates. The first order of business is so report that legendary Pirates slugger Craig Wilson has agreed to be my bench coach. If things go sideways – to use one of my predecessor Clint Hurdle’s favorite terms – you can blame Craig. I have decided to have Chris Archer start the opener on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Since I don’t have a true No. 1 starter – or a No. 2 for that matter – I decided to go with great theater by having Archer face his old team. The rest of the rotation, in order: Joe Musgrove, Mitch Keller, Trevor W

Playing the Pirates' 2020 season anyway

Hi there, As everyone knows, opening day of the Major League Baseball season was supposed to be on Thursday. However, like most of the rest of the world, the coronavirus pandemic has changed those plans. I have been asked to simulate the season using the game Out Of The Park Baseball 21. I will be the general manager/manager of the Pirates. We will play the original schedule, which means I'll make my managerial debut Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Virtual Tropicana Field. If enough people are interested, I'll post a small blurb on each game. I realize there are more important matters in the world but perhaps it can serve as a diversion for a few minutes. Stay safe, John
