Getting closer to The Perrotto Report newsletters launch

I love to talk baseball. Anyone who knows me knows that.

I have spent my entire life talking baseball. In fact, I have spent so much time talking baseball that it has likely been a detriment to my schoolwork, my social life and maybe even my marriage.

With that in mind, you can only imagine how much I enjoyed attending Major League Baseball’s Grapefruit League Media Day on Thursday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The Trop’s playing field was still lined for football with the East-West Shrine Game logo painted on it, which was only fitting for the most ill-conceived stadium currently in use in the major leagues.

Cheap shot at The Trop aside, the event provided an opportunity to chat with either the general managers or managers from many of the 15 teams that hold spring training in Florida. I took full advantage by chatting with most in a one-on-one setting.

That gave me plenty of material in preparation for the launch of The Perrotto Report on Feb. 26, a pair of direct-to-inbox newsletters. One will center on the major leagues and the other specifically on the Pittsburgh Pirates. They will be delivered at least three times a week throughout spring training, the regular season and the postseason then at least once a week during the offseason.

The plan is to also attend Cactus League Media Day next Tuesday in Glendale, Ariz. That should provide even more fodder for the newsletters.

I am truly excited about this project and I don’t get excited about much of anything anymore. Giving me an extra shot of enthusiasm is the overwhelming positive response I have received from people inside the game as well as some of the most respected sports journalists in North America.

Bob Nutting and PirateFest

A number of people have been in touch on social media or emailed wanting to know why Bob Nutting was not at Piratefest at PNC Park on Saturday morning/afternoon and but at the Pitt-West Virginia game on Saturday night. As a matter of disclosure, I wasn't at Piratefest and haven 't been there for years. I have no interest in it and, from a professional standpoint, don't find any value in attending. Nevertheless, I contacted Pirates spokesman Brian Warecki to ask about Nutting's whereabouts Saturday and he said the owner was on hand for a portion of Piratefest. This  was his response. "Bob was at Piratefest, along with his wife, for a few hours in the morning. He chatted with our players and mingled with season ticket holders." I also followed up by asking why Nutting did not take part in any of the Ask Pirates Management sessions as he has done in other years. Playing the Pirates' 2020 season anyway

Hi there, As everyone knows, opening day of the Major League Baseball season was supposed to be on Thursday. However, like most of the rest of the world, the coronavirus pandemic has changed those plans. I have been asked to simulate the season using the game Out Of The Park Baseball 21. I will be the general manager/manager of the Pirates. We will play the original schedule, which means I'll make my managerial debut Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Virtual Tropicana Field. If enough people are interested, I'll post a small blurb on each game. I realize there are more important matters in the world but perhaps it can serve as a diversion for a few minutes.
