I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. PITTSBURGH – Sean Manaea was impressive in his Virtual Pirates’ debut. Manaea pitched one-run ball over seven innings as the Virtual Buccos edged the Virtual St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Virtual PNC Park. Manaea (11-7) allowed five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out seven. The left-hander threw 105 pitches and the Cardinals’ lone run came on Yadier Molina’s solo homer in the second inning that opened the scoring. The Pirates (63-46) increased their lead to three games over the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers in the National League East. The Virtual Corsairs finished July with a 17-7 record. The

Williams pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings and the Virtual Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Virtual San Diego Padres 6-2 on Wednesday at Virtual Petco Park. SAN DIEGO – The Virtual Pirates made a blockbuster trade Tuesday as they try to win their first division title since 1992 then promptly lost ground in the National League Central standings. Zach Davis pitched two-hit ball over eight innings as the Virtual San Diego Padres defeated the Virtual Buccos 6-1 at Virtual Petco Park. The loss came after the Pirates made a five-player trade with the Virtual Oakland Athletics in which they acquired left-hander Sean Manaea, shortstop Marcus Semien and cash considerations. Going to the Athletics were Steven Brault, Triple-A closer Brett Cederlind and Low-Class A second baseman Nick Gonzales, who w

Eric Hosmer hit two home runs and had five RBIs as the Virtual San Diego Padres beat the Virtual Buccos 7-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Virtual Petco Park. The Pirates (61-45) have lost consecutive games for the first time since June 26-27 – exactly one month ago -- and had their lead in the National League Central cut to 1 ½ games over the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers. The Pirates and Padres also made a trade prior to the game. The Virtual Buccos acquired reliever Craig Stammen and cash considerations for Triple-A first baseman Will Craig and

MILWAUKEE – The Virtual Pirates added to their division lead in a showdown series with the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers but left Virtual Park on Sunday feeling they could have done more. Tyler Webb failed to retire any of the four batters he faced and all scored as the Brewers rallied for a 6-5 win after the Virtual Pirates took a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning. The Pirates (61-44) did win two of three in the series to increase their lead to 2 ½ games over the second-place Brewers in the National League Central. The Virtual Corsairs are 15-5 in July. Bench coach Craig Wilson was so impressed by the team’s effort that he sprung for bratwu

Please note now that the real baseball season is underway, I’m going to have to slow the virtual updates down a little, probably once a series. PITTSBURGH – The Virtual Pirates head into their biggest series of the season to date on a winning note. Mitch Keller had 13 strikeouts in six innings and Adam Frazier hit a go-ahead two-run double as the Virtual Buccos downed the Virtual San Diego Padres 6-4 on Thursday at Virtual PNC Park. The Pirates (59-43) took two of three in the series with the Padres and moved 1 ½ games in front of the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. PITTSBURGH – The first-place Virtual Pirates are getting contributions from seemingly everyone on the roster. It was the third-string center fielder’s turn to chip in on Sunday. Jason Martin went 3 for 4 with a walk to help the Virtual Buccos topple the Virtual Washington Nationals 9-6 on Sunday at Virtual PNC Park. The Pirates took two of three in the series with the defending World Series champions. CINCINNATI – Expectations were low for the real Pirates this season as USA TODAY predicted them to finish with 60-102 record prior to the start of spring training. The Virtual Pirates, though, have been one of the biggest surprises in the virtual major leagues. Shockingly, they lead the National League Central at the All-Star break. Adam Duvall’s two-run home run in the eighth inning broke a tie and propelled the Virtual Buccos to an 8-3 victory over the Virtual Cincinnati Reds on Sunday at Virtual Great American Ballpark. The Pirates (55-41) moved into first place in the division, ½ game ahead of the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers after takin
