Virtual Pirates sweep BoSox to go 11 games over .500

I will be serving as general manager/manager of the Pirates in a 2020 season simulation along with 29 others using Out Of The Park Baseball. Feel free to check here for daily updates. I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments.

PITTSBURGH – It was a memorable fourth of July weekend for the Virtual Pirates.

Trevor Williams pitched seven strong innings and pinch-hitter Jose Osuna delivered the go-ahead double as the Pirates beat the Virtual Boston Red Sox 5-3 at Virtual PNC Park on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep.

The Virtual Buccos (50-39) moved a season-high 11 games over .500 with their fifth straight victory. They trail the first-place Virtual Milwaukee Brewers by two games in the National League Central.

The only thing that kept the weekend from being perfect is that Josh Bell injured a hand while running the bases Saturday and was placed on the injured list. Ke’Bryan Hayes was recalled from Virtual Triple-A Indianapolis.

Williams (8-4) allowed two runs in seven innings with four strikeouts and one walk while throwing 103 pitches.

He got the win when Osuna broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh, sparking a three-run inning.

Nick Burdi worked around a walk by striking out the side in the ninth innings. He is a perfect 10-for-10 in save chances this season.

Elias Diaz had two hits for the Pirates and Gregory Polanco belted a two-run double.
Eduardo Rodriguez (8-9) took the loss. Xander Bogaerts had three hits for the Red Sox.

It was a pleasant 72 degrees at game time with the wind blowing out to left field at 10 mph. Time of game was three hours, one minute and attendance was 34,420.

On Saturday, the Virtual Corsairs celebrated the holiday with a 3-0 win as Joe Musgrove and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout.

Musgrove (10-4) gave up all the hits while working 7 2/3 innings and throwing 112 pitches. He struck out five, walked one and lowered his ERA to 3.09.

Keone Kela got the last out of the eighth inning and Burdi threw a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

The Pirates scored their runs on Diaz’s RBI single in the fourth off Brandon Workman (0-3) and a two-run home run by Jose Osuna, his ninth, in the eighth.

Frazier had three hits and Diaz added two.

Bench coach Craig Wilson made sure everyone had a good time.

He organized a hot dog eating contest among the pitchers before Friday’s game and a Zambelli fireworks show afterward. There was also a carnival outside the ballpark along with a rib festival throughout the weekend.

As they used to write back in the day, a good time was had by all. Well, by all but the Virtual Red Sox.

The Pirates open a four-game series against the Virtual Atlanta Braves on Monday night at Virtual Truist Park. Chris Archer (7-2, 3.19) will face Mike Soroka (8-4, 3.07).
