Big first inning powers Virtual Pirates by Brewers

I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. PITTSBURGH – The Virtual Pirates took away much of the suspense early in the opener of their pivotal four-game series with the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers. Travis Swaggerty’s grand slam capped a seven-run first inning and the Virtual Buccos rolled to a 9-2 victory Monday night at Virtual PNC Park. The division-leading Pirates (80-58) moved 7 ½ games in front of the second-place Brewers in the National League Central with 24 games remaining. Josh Bell hit a two-run home run, his 30 th , in the big first inning and Elias Diaz added an RBI single before Swaggerty connected with the bases full. LOUIS – The Virtual Pirates enter an important four-game home series with the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers coming off taking two of three from the Virtual St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend at Virtual Busch Stadium. That’s four Virtuals in one sentence. Tommy Edman’s RBI single in the bottom of the 12 th inning Sunday gave the Cardinals a 6-5 victory and allowed them to avoid being swept. The first-place Pirates (79-58) remained 6 ½ games ahead of the second-place Brewers in the National League Central. PHILADELPHIA -- The Virtual Pirates’ bid to sweep the season series from the Virtual Philadelphia Phlllies fell one run short. Breyvic Valera doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10 th inning off Keone Kela as the Phillies downed the Virtual Buccos 3-2 on Wednesday night at Virtual Citizens Bank Park. The Pirates (77-57) were unable to close out their second three-game sweep of the Phillies this year but remained five games ahead of the second-place Virtual Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. PITTSBURGH – The Virtual Pirates put on an inspired performance. Adam Frazier hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and Trevor Williams pitched one-run ball over seven innings Tuesday night as the Virtual Buccos beat the Virtual Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 at Virtual Citizens Bank Park. The Pirates (77-56) have won the first two games of the three-game series and five of their last six games. PHILADELPHIA – Kevin Newman has adjusted quite nicely to being as a bench player with Virtual Pirates. He will now be moving back to the starting lineup after a clutch hit. Newman’s two-run single as a pinch hitter in the top of the 10 th inning helped the Virtual Buccos to a 5-4 victory over the Virtual Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night at Virtual Citizens Bank Park. PITTSBURGH – The Virtual Pirates put enough runners on base but none of them crossed the plate. Shelby Miller and Drew Steckenrider combined on a six-hit shutout as the Virtual Miami Marlins blanked the Virtual Buccos 1-0 on Sunday at Virtual PNC Park. The Pirates (75-56) missed a chance to sweep the four-game series but remained 3 ½ games ahead of the second-place Virtual Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. Chris Archer (8-7) was the tough-luck loser as he allowed only one run – on a solo homer by rookie Monte Harrison in the seventh inning – on three hits in seven innings. Archer had nine strikeouts and one walk while throwing 90 pitches.

PITTSBURGH – This is the homestand for the Virtual Pirates to make some hay while playing two last-place team. So far, the Pirates are doing a good job of filling the barn. The Pirates improved to a 3-1 on their six-game homestand by outlasting the Virtual Miami Marlins 9-6 on Friday night at Virtual PNC Park. The Pirates have taken the first two games of the series following a two-game split with the Virtual Detroit Tigers. The Virtual Corsairs now have a 2 ½-game lead in the National League Central over the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers. Aristides Aquino hit a grand slam and Tyler Mahle pitched into the ninth inning as the Virtual Cincinnati Reds walloped the Virtual Buccos 14-1 at Virtual Great American Ball Park. The Pirates (71-54) split the four-game series and had its lead in the National League Central cut to two games over the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers. Joe Musgrove (11-5) was tagged for eight runs in 1 2/3 innings. He surrendered six hit, walked three, struck out one and threw 53 pitches. Rookie JT Brubaker and two relievers combined on a one-hit shutout and the Virtual Buccos rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Virtual Cincinnati Reds at Virtual Great American Ball Park. The Pirates (70-53) had lost five of their previous eight games and saw their 5 1/2-game lead in the National League Central over the Virtual Milwaukee Brewers cut to one game.
