Virtual Pirates rally in 9th to go over .500

I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. ST. LOUIS – The Virtual Pirates climbed over .500 on Sunday and did so in dramatic fashion. Kevin Newman’s RBI single capped a two-run ninth inning as the Virtual Buccos rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Virtual St. Louis Cardinals at Virtual Busch Stadium. The Pirates swept the three-game series and improved to 30-29. The Pirates rallied against Jack Flaherty (2-8) after being shut out by him through the first eight innings. Josh Bell doubled with one out and scored on Elias Diaz’s two-out double. Newman then grounded his single into center field to score Diaz on Flaherty’s 129 th and final pitch. I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. ST. LOUIS – The Virtual Pirates finally got back to .500 but it wasn’t easy. Gregory Polanco went 4 for 4 with two doubles and the Pirates weathered a three-run rally in the ninth inning to edge the Virtual St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Saturday at Virtual Busch Stadium. The Pirates are now 29-29 after winning the first two games of the three-game series. The Virtual Buccos had lost the last seven times in which they had a chance to reach .500. Bench coach Craig Wilson was so happy that he openly talked about the win being the beginning of a postseason push. LOUIS – Bryan Reynolds came off the injured list and made a quick impact for the Virtual Pirates. Reynolds’ two-run double keyed a five-run fifth inning as the Virtual Buccos built a 6-0 lead on the way to a 7-2 victory over the Virtual St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night at Virtual Busch Stadium in the opener of a three-game series. The Pirates are again within a game of .500 at 28-29. The Virtual Corsairs have lost each of their last seven games when they have had an opportunity to get to breakeven. PITTSBURGH – Getting to .500 is proving to be a steep hill to climb for the Virtual Pirates. Sonny Gray pitched a four-hitter Thursday to lead the Virtual Cincinnati Reds to a 7-2 victory over the Virtual Buccos at Virtual Great American Ball Park. The Pirates dropped two of three in the series and fell to 26-28. The Virtual Corsairs have lost each of the last seven times they have had a chance to reach .500. Blake Cederlind (0-1) was tagged for four runs in one-plus inning of relief to take the loss. CINCINNATI – The Virtual Pirates won a wild game and a stack of barbequed ribs Wednesday night but lost yet another relief pitcher. Gregory Polanco’s two-run double in the 10 th inning lifted the Pirates to a 7-4 victory over the Virtual Cincinnati Reds at Virtual Great American Ball Park. The Virtual Pirates again got within a game of .500 at 27-28. After the Reds pulled into a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning on Shogo Akiyama’s solo home run off Blake Weiman, the Pirates scored twice in the ninth to move in front 4-2. Mike Moustakas hit a grand slam as the Virtual Cincinnati Reds built a 13-1 lead after three innings and coasted to a 13-3 victory on Tuesday night at Virtual Great American Ball Park. The Pirates again missed a chance to get to .500 and have a 26-28 record one-third of the way through the season. Trevor Williams (4-4) was tagged for seven runs and seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings. I realize baseball is a lot less important than what is going on in the world today but perhaps it can provide a diversion for a few moments. PITTSBURGH – Joe Musgrove had a memorable Memorial Day. The big right-hander pitched a four-hitter as the Virtual Pirates rolled to an 8-1 victory over the Virtual San Francisco Giants on Monday at Virtual PNC Park. The Pirates took three of four in the series and got within a game of .500 at 26-27. Musgrove (5-3) struck out eight and walked one while throwing 112 pitches. The Giants’ lone run came on Rougned Odor’s homer in the fourth inning, which cut the Virtual Buccos’ lead to 2-1. PITTSBURGH – Every time the Virtual Pirates get to the brink of .500, they stumble. It happened again Sunday as Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Crawford had three hits each to lead the Virtual San Francisco Giants to a 7-5 victory at Virtual PNC Park. The Virtual Buccos’ three-game winning streak was snapped as they fell to 25-27. Bench coach Craig Wilson may be called upon to give a motivation speech the next time the Pirates get within a game of breakeven. Steven Brault (1-2) failed to make it out of the second inning as he was rocked for five runs and six hits in 1 1/3 innings. The left-hander had one walk and one strikeout. The Pirates r

PITTSBURGH – It was one of those nights when the maddingly-inconsistent Gregory Polanco showed why he was so highly touted while coming up though the minor leagues. Polanco went 4 for 5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs on Friday night to spearhead the Virtual Pirates’ 11-6 victory over the Virtual San Francisco Giants in the opener of a four-game series at Virtual PNC Park. Erik Gonzalez also had a big game as he knocked in five runs to help the Pirates win their second straight game and improve to 24-26. PITTSBURGH – Adam Duvall and Ke’Bryan Hayes finally made some contributions for the Virtual Pirates and they came at the right time. Duvall and Hayes hit run-scoring doubles during a three-run seventh inning as the Virtual Buccos rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Virtual Chicago Cubs on Thursday at Virtual PNC Park. The Pirates (23-26) avoided being swept in the three-game series and ended their three-game losing streak. Trailing 4-3, Duvall’s hit off Jon Lester tied the game. Anthony Rizzo’s three-run double in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Virtual Chicago Cubs to a 4-1 victory over the Virtual Buccos at Virtual PNC Park. The Pirates have lost three straight games, all in the eighth inning or later, to fall four games below .500 at 22-26. PITTSBURGH – It was a day of bad news for the Virtual Pirates. On the field, they lost to the Virtual Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Tuesday night at PNC Park. Anthony Rizzo’s eighth-inning home run broke a 2-2 tie. The loss dropped the Pirates to 22-25. Off the field, the Virtual Buccos learned that Bryan Reynolds (calf) and Michael Feliz (hamstring) are likely headed to the injured list after being removed from Monday night’s loss to the Mets in New York. NEW YORK – The Virtual Pirates not only lost a heartbreaker Monday night but two players to injury. J.D. Davis’ double in the bottom of the 11 th inning lifted the Virtual New York Mets to a 4-3 victory and a split of the four-game series at Virtual Citi Field. Bryan Reynolds sustained a yet-to-be-diagnosed injury when hit by a pitch in the fifth inning. Michael “Big Mike” Feliz was forced out of the game in the eighth inning and his injury also is unknown. NEW YORK – It was a long and damp Sunday at Virtual Citi Field but, in the end, it turned out well for the Virtual Pittsburgh Pirates. Josh Bell’s two-run home run helped lead the Virtual Buccos to an 11-9 victory over the Virtual New York Mets in a slugfest. Gregory Polanco also connected for the Pirates.
